Alberta students ramp up their careers in the trades PDF Print E-mail

EDMONTON — Four hundred and six apprentices from across Alberta will each receive scholarships to further their apprenticeship training.

The government of Alberta, along with industry partners, funds the scholarships awarded to Alberta high school graduates who participated in the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) and are pursuing careers in the trades.

RAP apprentices earn on-the-job training hours and a wage as they complete high school. This year, more than 1,500 high school students are participating in RAP. The scholarships, established in 2001, provide $1,000 to support students with in-class training at the post-secondary level.

"RAP helps students gain a head-start in the trades by providing real-world, on-the-job training," said Doug Horner, Minister of Advanced Education and Technology. "We're investing in the skills Alberta will need to compete in the 21st century."

"RAP provides students with valuable opportunities to enter into a trade during high school," said Andy Neigel, President and CEO of CAREERS: The Next Generation, which is an industry-driven private/public partnership dedicated to the career development of Alberta's youth. "The scholarships recognize their achievement and encourage students to progress in their trade."

"Skilled tradespeople will shape Alberta's future, that's why it's important students know about the career opportunities in the trades," said Brian Bickley, Chair of the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board. "Congratulations to all scholarship recipients."
