Economy versus injury: battle of the safest PDF Print E-mail
Written by Carolyn Yates
Despite a steady increase in workforce resulting in nearly two million workers covered by workers’ compensation, Alberta’s injury rates show signs of dropping.  A likely reason is the approximately 7,500 companies enrolled in the Partners in Injury Reduction (PIR) program, which is voluntary and intended to encourage and reward employers for safe behaviour. Member companies improve their safety and reap both human and financial rewards.

PIR employers meet Alberta safety standards by identifying hazards, controlling or eliminating risk from those hazards, providing employee training, implementing inspection programs, and developing emergency response plans, among other things.

This spring, employers registered in the PIR program have earned a share of a record $73.5 million in workers’ compensation premium rebates for their 2007 results.
