SAIT instrumentation instructor receives award PDF Print E-mail

CALGARY, AB — The next time you wash your hands under an automated water faucet instead of turning on a tap, you can thank an instrumentation professional like Wayne Marshall.

"Instrumentation is everywhere," says the long-time SAIT Polytechnic instructor, whose contributions to the field of automatic control were recognized with the Automation Professional of the Year Award from the International Society for Automation (ISA) Calgary Section on November 23.

Marshall, himself a SAIT graduate, has taught in the Instrumentation Engineering Technology and Instrumentation Apprenticeship programs for more than 20 years -—helping turn out graduates who are highly skilled in the measurement and control of pneumatic, electronic, analogue and digital instruments.

For most of that time, he also served as the faculty advisor to SAIT's ISA Student Section. As well, he coached SAIT student teams to one gold and three silver medals at international competitions in industrial control.

"Wayne has moulded hundreds if not thousands of minds on the wonders of instrumentation, and as the student advisor, he was a driving force in introducing students to the benefits of ISA," noted Gerald Desrochers, honours and awards chair for the ISA Calgary Section.

Marshall's initiatives at SAIT also include implementing distance delivery in the apprenticeship program and designing a training program for a major energy company.
