Dust control for belt conveyors PDF Print E-mail
Written by REM Staff
The Sandvik HX410, an electrostatic dust suppression system, offers an environmentally friendly way to control dust emissions at conveyor loading and transfer points. Quiet, efficient, water-free, easy to maintain and very cost-effective, it consumes less than 500 watts of electricity to capture around 95 percent of airborne dust particles.

The system is based on the ionization principle and has been designed to bind dust where it is formed. It is a simple system with very low operating and maintenance costs, offering many benefits in comparison to conventional “suction-through-filter” or “water-spraying” systems. It is suitable for retrofit as well as installation on new conveyor systems.

HX410 is modular in construction which reliably ensures that chutes are not a source of dust emission anymore.

How it works
Suppressing dust contained in the bulk material from blowing into the air, especially at the transfer points from one belt to another, is a constant challenge. In order to stop this dust from spreading over the entire conveyor area, the system is installed right after the chute, on top of the belt. Bulk and dust are led through the housing of the HX410 where a corona electrode inside the system ionizes the air. By combining the air molecules with the dust, the particles get electrostatically charged and drawn towards the housing and bulk material. A vibrator periodically shakes the housing so that the dust particles fall off and back into the process (on the conveyor).

The corona electrode is fed with high voltage and low currency. The power requirement is below 500W. Sandvik’s HX410 requires less than 1 hour per month of maintenance time. The system picks up particles in the range of 0.01 to 100 µm.

Applications
The Sandvik HX410 is suitable for use with almost all bulk materials, including a wide variety of aggregates, limestone, kaolin, iron ore/pellets, sinter, coke, cullet, phosphates and potash. The HX410 is ideal for use in industries such as mining, steel, cement, foundries, glass, paper and aggregates. Please note however, that it is not suitable for use in environments containing explosive dusts.

There are two different standard system sizes available. One from belt width 400 - 650 mm (15.75 - 25.59 inches) and one from 800 to 1400 mm (31.50 - 55.12 inches.) For belt width > 1400mm (55.12 inches) custom made constructions are an option.
